With funding from USAID from 2009 to 2014, Africare partnered with Management Sciences for Health and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to implement the Community-Based Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project (CUBS OVC) in 11 Nigerian states. The project empowered Nigerian Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and local women, especially female heads of households, to better care for Orphans and Vulnerable Children. The project:

• Built the capacity of 38 CSOs in organizational development, proposal development and OVC comprehensive service delivery
• Served 54,667 children across 12,500 households with needs-based-care
• Improved the earning capacity of 1,081 female heads of households with training in income generation, household nutrition and homestead farming
• Supported 511 women with start-up grants
• Trained over 14,000 female adolescents and caregivers in reproductive health, maternal health, nutrition, family planning and safe motherhood

Malaria Control Interventions for Impact

Location: Edo and Delta states
Purpose: Support and build capacity of public health facilities to effectively control malaria
Recent Accomplishment: Provided health care facilities with 301,025 Long Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets to prevent malaria

Malaria Prevention in ExxonMobil Supplier Communities (MAPS-C)
Donor: ExxonMobil Foundation
Location: Akwa Ibom and Rivers states
Purpose: Strengthen synergies between malaria services and programs and fill critical gaps in prevention, treatment and vector control
Recent Accomplishment: Procured and distributed 35,500 doses of Artemisinin-Combination Therapy for treatment of confirmed malaria

Power Forward
Donor: ExxonMobil Foundation
Implementing Partner: The National Basketball Association
Location: 10 public and private high schools in Abuja
Purpose: Develop health, leadership and life skills among youth in Nigeria
Recent Accomplishment: The pilot project has trained 289 students trained in life skills basic basketball skills

Promoting Initiative for Malaria Eradication II
Donor: The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
Implementing Partner: Society for Family Health
Location: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Delta, Edo and Rivers states
Purpose: Build the capacity of patent medicine vendors to ensure prompt, effective and sustained responses to malaria
Recent Accomplishment: Treated more than 1 million people, including over 317,300 children under 5, with Artemisinin-Combination Therapy in accordance with national guidelines
