Success in Senegal

On a visit to project sites in Burkina Faso, Information Officer for the Office of Food for Peace Jessica Hartl was struck by Africare’s impact on the community of Rassomdé. Years after Africare’s project ended in 2010, the community was able to withstand the region’s food crisis in 2012, and producers’ enduring ability to garden in the off-season nets an income of $617 per household . Africare helped construct canals to connect fields to a nearby reservoir, developing 30 hectares of land. Now families have food all year round, and they are eating more nutritious meals.

When scaling up malaria control interventions in 2012, Africare helped ensure that almost double the number of targeted households properly used long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets.

“Africare comforts the poor man;

Africare never puts out the fire which vacillates;

Africare listens to the widow and to the orphan;

Africare straightens the tree which withers;

Africare holds out a hand to the afflicted;

Africare restores the smile of those hurt;

And if Africare was a physical person, we would have demanded its inscription in the cannon of the saints.

Africare has taken the major concerns of the population as its personal priority… We cannot say that Africare has neutralized food insecurity. However, we can assert frankly that it has drastically reduced poverty in the population of Zondoma.”
